"My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from Him." (Ps. 62:5)
There is a small group of finches that faithfully show up each morning at the feeder in my back yard, pecking eagerly at the seeds I have left for them. They have learned where to find their food and they come each day, expecting it to be there. They gather around and eat until they are filled And they leave satisfied.
As God’s children, do we truly expect to receive our substance from Him? Do we come before Him daily, to partake of His Word, in earnest expectation of the satisfaction of our soul?
I, being an imperfect provider, have at times forgotten to fill an empty feeder. But the finches were there in the morning, waiting patiently, unwilling to leave the place that had so long been providing for them.
God will never leave us nor forsake us, for we belong to Him, and He has undertaken our care. He has proven Himself, throughout the ages, to be an Unfailing and Faithful Provider. Yet when we come to the table of His Word, do we wait for the rich feast we know He will lay before us? Or do we leave un-nourished and unsatisfied, only to beg from the world for what He alone can give?
God has provided for the finches in my backyard, though they have done nothing to incite Him to give them nourishment. How much more has He done, in giving us His own blessed Son, that we might become partakers of Living Bread for eternity?
"Behold the fowls of the air,: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?" (Matt. 6:26)
