When the Master Calls

"The Master is come, and calleth for thee." (John 11:28)

Mary's love for Christ showed in her quick response to His call - "As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him." (vs. 29) Christ calls us, through His Word, to come to Him, to received from Him and live from Him. But, like Israel, how often He must say to us, "All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people." (Rom. 10:21)

Mary knew the secret pleasure of being in His presence. Her earthly cares vanished when she was with Him. She knew that He alone was the Life-giver, who would cause the dead to live again. She would rather be near Him, gazing upon Him, than join the ranks of those who were too busy serving Him to rest at His table.

There is no greater place to be, than at the feet of Jesus, learning from Him, drawing on His power. When He speaks, the rocks and the trees listen. Mountains obey His command. Will we fail to know the glory that all of His creation declares? Do we not realize that His Word is the eternal Word of God and has power to create life, where once there was only death? Do we hear the voice of God saying, "This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear ye Him?"

The Master is calling. He bids His own to come and sup with Him at His table. He is leading His sheep out to green pastures where they will abide safely with Him. They know His voice and will follow Him wherever He goes. "Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts..." (Heb. 3:7) Rise up and go to meet Him.
